Description
As a mark of German craftsmanship, the name "Solingen" enjoys the confidence of the whole world.
In order to keep this trust and with it the reputation of the Solingen cutting tools, and to prevent misuse of this name, the government passed a law in 1938 to protect the name of Solingen.
The law makes stipulations relating to the geography of the production area with the intention of protecting regional industry. If an article is manufactured in Solingen but the raw materials, i.e. the blanks are produced elsewhere, the article may not bear the Solingen name.
The law "for the protection of the name of Solingen", which is now seen to be equivalent to EU guidelines, distinguishes between so-called hot-forged and cold-forged scissors.
Cold-forged scissors are of very poor quality and include the cheap scissors sold on the market in large quantities. They are made of steel wire which has been cut to length and placed under high pressure without heating, and are mostly only held together with a simple rivet. These scissors do not bear the Solingen mark of quality.
We neither manufacture nor offer scissors of this type. More than 90% of our scissors, which are largely produced manually, are hot-forged. The materials used in their manufacture include the tried-and-tested carbon steel categories C45 and C60; however, more than half of them are manufactured from non-corrosive stainless steel including at least 13% chromium and 0.46% carbon. In some cases, special alloys with a higher proportion of chromium or molybdenum are used.
A very small proportion of our scissors are fabricated from sheets or strips of non-corrosive material cut out with a fine stamping technique and hardened using inert gas. If they fulfil the minimum technical requirements stipulated in the Solingen law, they are likewise protected by it. These reasonably priced scissors have a plastic grip, are lighter and there is less manual processing involved.
The "Solingen quality" is a minimum requirement for us, which is fulfilled by our entire product range. The endeavour to improve on this quality is our most important precept!
